About COVID-19

In March of 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the COVID-19 outbreak a pandemic.

COVID-19 belongs to a family of viruses called Coronaviruses that cause illnesses such as the common cold, severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS). The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) is known to cause severe acute respiratory symptoms in some patients.

The incubation period of the virus is about 14-days, which means you may be infected before showing any symptoms. Once symptoms appear, an infected person may experience mild to severe symptoms such as:

  • Fever
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Cough

Other less common symptoms are:

  • Tiredness
  • Aches
  • Runny nose
  • Sore throat
  • Chills
  • Loss of taste or smell

Those who have an immune condition, or who are elderly with pre-existing health conditions are considered to be at risk and are the most vulnerable group of people.

The COVID-19 Studies are collecting information with blood and saliva samples to better understand the body’s immune response to COVID-19.
